American Civil War history 101

The next day we went off to learn about the civil war.  We got a boat to Fort Sumter where the American cival war began. Thanks Ange and Bob!

In summary, Lincoln was elected President, South  Carolina were not happy about this so seceded from the Union (along with a couple of other States),  in Charleston harbour there is a semi man-made island (it was sand dune type of things that the Americans built  up during the war of independence and built a fort on). In this fort there were 80 unionist soldiers (pro- Lincoln) and they put up a big flag to advertise this.  South Carolinans were not happy and asked them nicely to leave, after 3 months they hadn't done that and so they were fired upon and the 4 yr civil war began.  After 34 hrs of being bombarded the unionists evacuated the fort and ran back to Washington - exactly 4 yrs later (on April 14) the Head unionist guy came back when they had won the war and put back up his big flag.  That day Lincoln was assinated.  So now Clare knows that when Wiki says "what has happened on this day in history" for April 14th it will probably say:

1) Clare Towers was born
2) the American civil war began
3) Lincoln was assinated
4) titanic hit an iceberg.

Important stuff happens on April 14th.

There was a thunderstorm while we were there - which apparently dolphins love (we saw lots), Rich didn't love it that much.
